A Day in the Life
Serving as your Brookland District Supervisor involves a significant investment of time. I spend as much as 60 to 70 hours a week representing the Brookland District and attending approximately 90% of the 60 or so scheduled meetings and activities that appear on my calendar each month. You may be surprised to learn that I receive about 20 telephone calls per day during the first four days of every week. The phone rings less frequently on Friday afternoons and the weekends although I make myself available to my constituents whenever I am needed.

In addition to representing the Brookland District on the Board of Supervisors, I actively participate on several local and regional appointed boards and commissions. I also meet with constituents, attend ribbon-cutting ceremonies, evaluate zoning and development requests, investigate  citizen complaints, visit with community organizations, talk to school and youth groups, greet dignitaries, monitor County government services, consult with other officials, and promote Henrico County and the Brookland District. Despite my very full calendar of scheduled functions, I somehow manage to find time for impromptu events that I know are important to my constituents.

To be responsive and effective, an elected official must be visible and accessible to the public. I thoroughly enjoy riding through the many wonderful neighborhoods in the district and occasionally stopping to introduce myself and chat with citizens. When conflicts on my schedule arise, my first priority is always to attend those activities taking place within the Brookland District. I feel it is most important that I personally keep my constituents informed and I welcome the opportunity to hear their concerns directly.

To assist me in staying on top of the large volumes of calls and correspondence I receive, I rely heavily on the latest technology. I use an automated system to record and refer citizen inquiries and to document actions taken by county personnel to resolve the issue. Also, my schedule is maintained on computer and updated daily. In 1997, I acquired an e-mail address so that my constituents would have another way to communicate with me. And, as you can see, I have established a web site on the Internet so that I may keep you better apprised of my service to you as your elected representative on the Henrico County Board of Supervisors. I receive and answer approximately 60 emails per week from citizens.
